What is fitness really ? If Outside Magazine crowned six-time winner Ironman triathlete Mark Allen the fittest man on earth, what can be said about Simon Poleman, seven-times New-Zealand national decathlete champion, as well as national champion in several individual events, including 100m sprint, 110m hurdles, long jump, pole vault and shot put? Or what could be said about Arnold Schwarzenegger, seven-time Mr. Olympia champion, including one 6 months after coming back from retirement? The only way to judge fitness is to have a good definition to begin with. Most will say cardio is a big component of it. But is it more important than overall strength? Or than flexibility? Or power? Or is it a combination of some of them? Or is it a combination of it all?
Let’s take the human body as a whole and define its function. It is made to :
- Run for long periods of time;
- Sit;
- Walk;
- Jump;
- Lift itself up from a ledge;
- Crawl;
- Lift some weight, not necessarily gym stuff;
- Row;
- Play sports;
- Accelerate abruptly;
- Decelerate abruptly;
- Pick up something from the ground;
- Trip over something;
- Fight;
- Dive;
- Use dexterity;
- Etc. |

So, if the human body is made to do such things, why is it that cardio athletes are revered as the fittest ones? Shouldn’t it be that those that can actually perform well in any situation be crowned the fittest ones? This is what CrossFit brings to training : the fact that your training will be, just as in real life, constantly varied. It will also make sure that it will be done at high intensity, and it will be made only of functional movements, and by functional, I mean it in the general human being way, and not in the sedentary way. The intensity will make sure that calories are burned, the functional movements in full range of motion will make sure that no joint gets injured, and the constant variation will make sure the athlete stays away from overtraining and overuse. It is the best general preparedness training you can find.
